We thought about simply including these dominant alpha male keywords in the Romance section, but when the largest sub-category of Romance (which is in itself the largest category by volume and sales) is so dominant, it’s a niche that deserves it’s own page. The vast majority of readers for this niche are women, and that is important to keep in mind when crafting keywords. As this is a flooded niche, it’s important to stand out with some keyword variety – normally I am all about using the most used keywords as a pragmatic rule, however this category is one exception, at least in my opinion. In such a broad category, it’s essential to narrow your keywords. You need to target long tail keywords, unless you’re planning on running a large marketing campaign or are an experience author who’s confident your book will hit the top of the charts. Sales in this category tend to jump straight off a cliff after a certain point due to both the volume of new books entering the category, and also the limited sub-genres. Keywords are your main tool against this decay, so make sure you really swing and hit a solid niche keyword category that people will search for, for years to come, that’s not getting totally flooded with new books constantly.
